Commercial drone building and structure inspection services from Building Diagnostics Group are faster, more efficient and more accurate than conventional inspection methods.
Building Diagnostics Group (BDG) is a multifaceted consulting firm that specializes in the non-destructive detection, investigation, and resolution of water intrusions on multi-family, commercial, industrial and institutional buildings throughout the nation. Our expertise in infrared building science and water testing procedures enables us to identify the cause and origin of most building failures.
With several high-resolution infrared cameras, each designed for a specific use, and a highly trained team of professionals including FAA Authorized Commercial sUAS Remote Pilots, Certified Level III Thermographers, Certified Industrial Hygienists (CIH), and other engineering/architectural specialists, BDG provides the most comprehensive non-destructive building investigations available today.
About Commercial Drones & Infrared Thermography
Commercial drones — also called unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) or small unmanned aircraft systems (sUAS) – make it possible to accurately and efficiently inspect roofs, building enclosures, and other elevated structures under construction or in need of repair, all from the comfort and safety of the ground. The aerial data gathered is used for effective quality control, asset management, investigations, and project documentation.
Commercial drones use advanced GPS systems that track up to 18+ satellites at one time. They have onboard optical avoidance sensors, redundant backup systems, and some even use dual D-RTK antennas to withstand strong magnetic interference.
BDG has an inventory of four commercial FLIR-equipped DJI Inspire and Matrice drones mounted with high-resolution infrared camera systems that can detect building defects beyond the visible inspection, identifying potential problems that could cost thousands of dollars to repair.
Aerial Infrared Roof Inspections
Thermal imaging cameras are a powerful tool for conducting roof inspections. This service is performed just after sunset and works on the premise that wet areas on a roof retain heat longer than dry areas. As the roof’s surface cools after sunset, the temperature differences are easily detectable using sUAS aerial thermal imaging. The areas of moisture are documented for further investigation and proper repair recommendations.
BDG is FAA-authorized to perform nighttime aerial operations with an approved Daylight Operation Waiver under 14 CFR § 107.29. The waiver allows us to perform aerial infrared roof inspections throughout the United States.
Aerial Solar Panel Inspections
Regular solar panel inspections are important for efficient power generation, long service life, and high returns on investment. Performing aerial drone thermal inspections starting with new installation and followed by annual inspections will help extend the solar panels’ lifetime.
sUAS inspections are greatly reducing the quality assurance program cost of solar field inspections by eliminating helicopter rental, pilot payment, fuel bills, and the other costs associated with bringing it all together. Furthermore, inspections are performed under normal operating conditions and do not require a shutdown.
Aerial Tower & Structure Inspections
BDG provides high-resolution digital photography and infrared thermal imaging services to help maintain, build, or modify water tower structures and other elevated structures. Complete structure documentation includes noting visible deficiencies, documenting the condition of the existing coating, determining hardware failures, and providing general overall tower conditions.
