ASTM E783

The ASTM E 783 (Standard Test Method for Field Measurement of Air Leakage Through Installed Exterior Windows and Doors) is a testing standard that describes the procedures to determine air leakage rates of installed windows and doors.

This testing standard is most often specified to determine the air leakage of newly installed windows and doors. It is intended to measure air leakage associated with the assembly and not the leakage through the openings and adjacent construction.

The testing can be adapted for use to correlate potential paths of leakage from within the installed openings. This is helpful to identify air infiltrations so they can be controlled or eliminated.

The testing is performed by sealing a chamber to the interior or exterior face of the test specimen, supplying or exhausting air from the chamber at a rate required to maintain the specified test pressure, and measuring the air flow lost or gained across the testing chamber.

Extraneous air must also be documented to ensure proper measurement of leakage from the test specimen. The acceptable flow rate (air loss) is determined by subtracting the flow rate required to maintain constant pressure to the amount of extraneous air leakage.

Acceptable rates of airflow are determined by the project specifier.

The AAMA 502 (Voluntary Specification for Field Testing of Newly Installed Fenestration Products) refers to the ASTM E 783 for the air infiltration portion of new construction quality assurance testing.

BDG utilizes professional testing equipment that is calibrated to each specific testing standard for accurate results. Our field consultants are properly trained and knowledgeable of all testing standards. Don’t trust your project to just anyone. Far too often, we hear of incompetent testing companies trying to perform these precise tests with homemade equipment that does not meet calibration requirements.

If you are looking for a reputable second or third-party testing company to perform accurate professional testing, provide concise reports, and help you through the entire process, contact BDG today. We provide testing services throughout the United States from our headquarters located in Atlanta, GA.
