Atlanta Thermal Roof Inspections
Atlanta Thermal Roof Inspections

Roof maintenance is an important part of protecting your commercial property investment. If you need an accurate, economical thermal infrared roof inspection in Atlanta, Building Diagnostics Group can help.

Founded in 2002, Building Diagnostics Group (BDG) specializes in the non-destructive detection, investigation, and resolution of water intrusions on multi-family, commercial, industrial and institutional buildings. We can handle any size project.

Robert Scherer, President, is certified in Advanced Building Diagnostics and is an ITC Certified Level III Thermographer, Certified Indoor Environmentalist and Certified Mold Inspector with more than 15 years of thermography experience in a wide range of applications.

The highly trained BDG team’s expertise in infrared building science and water testing procedures enables us to identify the cause and origin of most building and roof system failures. We are capable of performing thorough inspections on large properties in days rather than weeks. We can usually evaluate 10 to 15 low-rise apartment buildings in just a few days on site.

About Infrared Thermography (IR)

Infrared thermography (IR) is the use of specialized equipment (infrared cameras, also known as thermal imaging devices) to measure the infrared radiation (thermal energy) emitted from an object. The amount of radiation increases with temperature but is not visible because its wavelength is too long to be detected by the human eye.

When there is a leak in a roof membrane, water can enter the roof system and saturate the insulation and underlying layers. During the day, solar energy heats up the roof membrane and the insulation underneath. When the sun sets, the roof system cools off, but the wet areas hold the heat longer than the dry areas. Thermographic cameras can detect these variations in temperature with or without visible illumination.

Infrared thermography is the only diagnostic tool that instantly detects whether water has penetrated a roof system or building envelope.

Roof Inspection Services

BDG offers several types of roof inspection services depending on the roof type, location, and client needs:

Walk-Over Inspections: BDG’s visual photographic roof inspections use professional grade infrared camera equipment to capture high-resolution digital images. The inspector systematically walks the low slope roof, typically at night, looking for normally invisible cooler areas that are typical of wet insulation, ensuring that the entire surface is inspected.

Aerial Inspections: BDG’s aerial drone thermal infrared roof inspections can significantly reduce the time and expense of commercial roof inspections in comparison to conventional methods. We perform this service just after sunset to detect warm trapped moisture under the roofing membrane. Our infrared roof inspections will catch minor moisture penetrations before they have a chance to escalate into costly repairs.
