Drone Thermographic Inspection
Drone Thermographic Inspection

Drone thermographic inspection can help you see the unseen. Building Diagnostics Group performs detailed aerial infrared inspections for building owners and purchasers throughout the nation that can pinpoint the exact locations of moisture infiltration, energy loss and material failures and help them make informed decisions.

Building Diagnostics Group (BDG) is a multifaceted consulting firm that specializes in infrared building science, aerial thermography, and water testing procedures that enable us to identify the cause and origin of most roof and building failures.

Robert Scherer, President of BDG, is certified in Advanced Building Diagnostics and is an ITC Certified Level III Thermographer with over 15 years of thermography experience in many different applications. Robert is also a Certified Indoor Environmentalist and Certified Mold Inspector. He has presented at building industry conferences and published white papers on specialty applications for the use of infrared thermography.

What is Infrared Thermography?

Infrared inspection (or thermography) is a non-destructive and cost-effective heat-sensing technique used to “see” and “measure” the thermal energy emitted by objects that cannot be detected by the human eye.

Thermography provides a means to view systems (electrical, mechanical, building envelopes) under normal operating conditions to identify abnormally warm or cool areas that indicate moisture intrusion, insulation deficiencies and other energy losses.

BDG’s expertise is in multi-family and commercial building facade evaluations. With our proven inspection techniques and high-resolution infrared thermography, we can rapidly identify costly hidden damage behind most facades. This provides the owner or purchaser with an accurate understanding of the building’s structural integrity in order to make informed decisions.

Aerial Thermography

Traditional building inspection techniques involve drilling holes in walls, removing whole sections of walls to install inspection ports, and other time-consuming and invasive techniques. Observation is typically done at ground level, from a ladder, or by physically walking the building or roof.

Historically, acquiring aerial images required the construction of temporary elevated platforms that were costly and put workers at risk. An even more expensive option was to hire a private aircraft.

Today, drone technology enables us to fly an unmanned aircraft to assess any area in need of inspection with aerial images and real-time video surveillance. These inspections can be performed in just a few hours and allow inspectors to observe the results of the inspection from the ground with virtually no risk of injury.

The highly trained team of professionals at BDG are fully insured FAA Authorized Commercial sUAS Remote Pilots who conduct inspections with four DJI Inspire and Matrice aircraft that are equipped with high-resolution FLIR camera systems. The drones feature a Zenmuse XT 640×512 resolution radiometric infrared camera that is capable of producing 20+ megapixel images and full 4K videos.
