Infrared Inspection Consultants

When you need to identify moisture problems in your multi-family, commercial, industrial or institutional building before they become serious, take advantage of the expertise of infrared inspection consultants such as Building Diagnostics Group.

About Us

Building Diagnostics Group (BDG) is a multifaceted consulting firm with extensive expertise in infrared building science and water testing procedures that enable us to identify the cause and origin of most building failures.

Robert Scherer, President of BDG, has over 25 years of residential and commercial construction experience. In 2000, he was introduced to the incredible potential of infrared thermography in the building construction industry and purchased his first infrared camera, the first in southwest Florida.

Robert became a pioneer in the field of moisture intrusion and building defect investigations with the use of infrared thermography. He is a Certified Indoor Environmentalist, Certified Mold Inspector, an ITC Certified Level III Thermographer with over 15 years of thermography experience, and is certified in Advanced Building Diagnostics.

About Infrared Inspection

Traditional building inspection techniques involve drilling holes in walls, removing whole sections of walls to install inspection ports, and other time-consuming and invasive techniques. Using infrared technology, there is no need for these destructive testing methods.

Infrared inspection (or thermography) is a passive and cost-effective heat-sensing technique used to “see” and “measure” the thermal energy emitted by objects that cannot be detected by the human eye.

Thermography provides a means to view systems (electrical, mechanical, building envelopes) under normal operating conditions to identify abnormally warm or cool areas that indicate moisture intrusion, insulation deficiencies and other energy losses.

With several infrared cameras, each designed for a specific use, the highly trained Building Diagnostics Group team has completed water testing and building inspections across the nation, providing the most comprehensive non-destructive building investigations available today.

Our infrared inspection services include, but are not limited to:

Exterior building inspections – BDG can thoroughly evaluate a building’s exterior wall system for water intrusions that may have damaged the exterior sheathing and/or structural components and effectively identify potential hidden defects.

Interior building inspections – With our extensive knowledge and use of high resolution infrared cameras, we can quickly pinpoint the exact location of water intrusions with little or no physical disassembly of the premises and with minimal disturbance to the occupants.

Commercial roof surveys – Infrared roof inspections are a non-contact and non-destructive testing method of finding active roof leaks before they break through and drip down a wall or onto a floor below. Our team can evaluate up to 300,000 SF of roof area in a single visit via our walk-over method, or millions of square feet by utilizing our aerial sUAS service.

Cell Fill (CMU) evaluations – Concrete Masonry Walls (CMU), commonly referred to as concrete block walls, are not structurally sound without proper rebar and grouting. Infrared technology is the most effective tool for surveying a masonry wall to detect deficiencies in the structural components.

Energy audits – Infrared thermography provides a unique opportunity to identify and address areas where heat loss and moisture intrusion are negatively impacting building performance. BDG’s energy audits are the fastest and most effective non-destructive method of assessing the energy efficiency of residential and commercial structures and HVAC systems.
