Building Diagnostics Group (BDG) is a multifaceted consulting firm, founded in 2002, that specializes in infrared building science, aerial thermography, and water testing procedures that enable us to identify the cause and origin of most roof and building failures.
President of BDG, Robert Scherer, is an ITC Certified Level III Thermographer with over 15 years of thermography experience in many different applications and is certified in Advanced Building Diagnostics. Robert is also a Certified Indoor Environmentalist and Certified Mold Inspector. He has presented at building industry conferences and published white papers on specialty applications for the use of infrared thermography.
BDG Inspection Services
The presence of moisture in building envelopes can have serious consequences and is one the most significant factors affecting the building’s durability. Because water conducts and stores heat better than most building materials, thermal imaging can reveal areas of water intrusion and water retention as buildings cool after being under a thermal load.
BDG offers services in several different roles. We often work with engineering firms during the due diligence process of an acquisition and are typically the first to inspect the exterior of a property, providing insight as to the overall condition and the need, if any, for additional services.
Many commercial and multi-family properties contract us to perform annual inspections to proactively protect their investments. And clients often use our services in conjunction with litigation and insurance claims to either provide details as to the extent of the claim or provide bid specification for remedial actions.

Exterior building inspections – We can thoroughly evaluate a building’s exterior wall system for water intrusions that may have damaged the exterior sheathing and/or structural components and effectively identify potential hidden defects.
Interior building inspections – With our extensive knowledge and use of high resolution infrared cameras, we can quickly pinpoint the exact location of water intrusions with little or no physical disassembly of the premises and with minimal disturbance to the occupants.
Commercial roof surveys –BDG’s roof inspections are fast and affordable and provide a clear picture of active roof leaks and damaged areas. Our team can evaluate up to 300,000 SF in a single visit via our walk-over method, or millions of square feet by utilizing our aerial sUAS service.
After each inspection, BDG interprets the infrared data and provides clients with a comprehensive report. High-resolution digital images can be provided in a traditional PDF report format that outlines concerns found during the inspection and recommendations for proper repairs. They can also be uploaded to our cloud reporting platform to produce a large format stitched image or a 3D model that can easily be annotated, measured, and shared.
